The Pateena reached Lyttelton at 10.30 this morning, connecting 'with the second express south. The Maori left Lyttelton last night for Wellington with 350 passengers. The Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Taiinii, which in June last, whilst bound to London from New Zealand, came into collision with the s.s. Tnca, and had a narrow escape from foundering as a resultof the damage she sustained, has been thoroughly repaired and taken up her running again, having left London a week ago for New Zealand ports. Captain L. Schmidt, who visited New Zealand some time ago in the Hansa liner Marienfels, is now in command of the Sturmfels, at present at Auckland. According to latest advices the vessel may be expected at Wellington about the 261 hj inst. The Shaw-Savill liner Mamari, now on her way from London to Dunedin and Lvttelton via Wellington, is bringing a bit: batch of immigrants, who will bo landed st Wellington on her arrival there, about December 28. A cable has been received intimating that the A.U. liner Indra.lema arrived at London on the 10th inst. from Australian ports; also that she is timed to leave London again on the 9th prox. for Melbourne, Sydney, and New Zealand ports. In the annual report of the New Zealand Shipping Company it is stated that an order for a cargo steamer has been placed with a Clydebank firm, and for another with tho 'Societe des Ateliers et Ohantiers. of Dunkirk. Inquiries showthat, as in other instances of a simliar kind, the order went to the Continental firm simply because they could promise earlier delivery—to the extent of three or lour months—than British builders. So far as price is concerned, that of the French company compared favorably with British figures. This, the first ship for the New Zealand Shipping Company to be constructed out of Great' Britain, 'is due for delivery in the early part of nextyear. The vessel will bo propelled by twin-screw reciprocating engines. She is of the same type as the company's existing steamer Kaikoura. and is being constructed under the supervision of the Board of Trade, and to take the highest class at Lloyd's.—Sydney ' Shipping Gazette.' . a Commander Carr, R.N.. the senior naval officer of the New Zealand Division of H.M. Navy, advises the Wellington Branch of the Navy League as to the disposition and movements of the four ships constituting the New Zealand Division of the Imperial Navy : r.vramus (at Auck- I land)_ and Psyche (at Wellington) are to remain as at present pending'termination of the strike. Philomel to arrive at Wellington from England about December 9. Torch, at Sydney, will probablv arrive at Wellington early in December. There arc vacancies aboard tho Psyche and Pyramus for recruits, and applications for" enrolment should be addressed to tho officer commanding either of the warships mentioned. Kaiapoi, s.s., sailed from Wellington last night for New Plymouth. She returns to Wellington to load for Southern ports. Wanaka, e.g., leaves Auckland this week with cargo, undertaking the East Coast run. Kittawa, s.s., will be despatched from Wellington to-night with cargo for Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland. The tremendous amount of labor and expense involved in keeping clear the Mersey channel in order that" big vessels may go in and out of the port'safely is indicated in tho engineer's report presented to the Mersey Dock- and Harbor Board. Five large dredging vessels (one of them the largest in the world) have been continuously employed, and the quantity of sand removed from the bar and shoals in tho Queen's and Crosbv channels during the year ended July 'l last is 16,496,850 tons. The quantity of sand removed from the bar since the commencement of dreciginc there in 1890 is 52.306,140 tons, and from the shoals in the Queen's and Crosbv channels 151.622.360 tons, making a total for these positions of 203.928.500 tons.
