GROCERS' ASSISTANTS' UNION

The Otago Grocers' Assistants' Union held their second annual social in the Waratah Tea Rooms last night. Mr H. Beecher presided over an attendance of about 80. Several members of the Master Grocers' Association were present, including the president (Mr J. W. Hinton). ' The Chairman delivered a short introductory address. He said the affairs of the union had been carried on with unqualified success, and the membership had been increased bv 50. Tho union had succeeded in getting better conditions of labor for the members, and during the year had got a preference to unionists clause in their agreement—for which they had been striving for a long time." The trade lectures had been an outstanding pait of the year's programme. These had brought members into touch w.'th other branches of the trade, and given them knowledge that could not be picked up in the ordinary clay's work. (Applause.) Mr Hinton presented the prizes ,von during the year. Following is the list:—Weighing competition, Mt J. Wilson ]., Mr W. Fvfo 2; juniors—Mr T. Wills 1, J. Wills 2. Window dressing competition, T. Rosevear 1, J. Wilson 2, A. Holmes 3. Ex-president's diplomas, Mr W. Renwick and R. Timlin. Mr W. Renwick was given a special prize in recognition of past services to tho union. Mr Hinton referred to the absence of Mr Gallagher, retiring secretary of the union, to whom a presentation was to have been made. Me was sorry to hear that Mr Gallagher had decided to relinquish the position of secretary. Following is tho toast list:—"The Vicitors," proposed by Mr A. Holmes and responded to by Messrs W. Wright and W. Roberts; "The Grocers' Union," proposed by Mr J. Oliver and responded to by Mr > H. Beecher; " The_ Trade Lectures," proposed by Mr W. Renwick and responded to by Mr A. Holmes; "Affiliated Unions," proposed by Mr J. Henderson and responded to by Mr R. Breen (secretary of the Trades and Labor Council)': "Prize-winners," proposed by Mr J. W. Hinton and responded to by Mr T. Wills; "The Performers," and "The Press."

A well-selected programme was contributed to during the evening by the following:—Messrs T. Bauchop- (song), S. Foote (recitation). J. B. M'Connell (recitation), F. Keilliher (song), C. Badham (violin solo), D. Fogarty (song), B. Fogarty (song), J. Henderson (recitation, and W. Wright (sons).
