CROMWELL NOTES

“Our Own’’ writes:—ln view of the Public Works Statement and the Estimates being presented to Parliament at an early date, the various railway leagues in tho locality are making a combined plead for the extension of the railway from Clyde. They are sanguine of having a vote provided for the work, and seem quite prepared to accept a light line. And their optimism is not unfounded. Hitherto we have had two burning questions—the extension of the railway and irrigation—both necessitating heavy expenditure, and a strong argument now being used in favor of the line is that by the Cromwell Development party’s proposed scheme the Government’are relieved of providing; for irrigation, and all that tho districts now claim in a large way is railway communication, and that only. Tho initiation of this scheme, which is now assured, will be the dawn of an industry which will be permanent, and will embrace a large area of land at present bung waste. A well-attended meeting of the Cromwell branch of the league was held on Friday, and the following resolutions were carried:—

That this meeting of tho Cromwell Branch of , the Otago Central Railway League are of opinion that the time has arrived when a substantial vote should be placed on the Estimates for tho continuance of the railway from Clyde to Cromwell, and that the same gauge be adhered to. That this meeting are confident that the Hon. Mr Fraser, who has been one of the supporters .of the Otago Central Railway, both while in opposition and at the present time, will use his best endeavors to promote the welfare of the district by strongly urging that a vote he placed on the Estimates for the immediate extension of the line.
