FORTUNES OF MR CHINN, Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, September 5. (Received September 5, at- 9.25 a.m.) An inquiry into the dismissal of Mr Chinn from the Public Service is being conducted by a committee of the Senate. Yesterday Mr Chinn was severely crossexamined regarding bis qualifications as an engineer. [ln the final session of the last Commonwealth Parliament a strong attack was made in tho House on the appointment of Mr Chinn as an engineer on the Transcontinental railway construction, the allegation being that Mr Chinn's qualifications were unsatisfactory, and that his appointment was purely a'political one, being pressed on the Commonwealth Government by the Scaddan Government in West Australia for election services rendered by Mr Chinn. Mr Fisher ordered an inquiry into these charges before a Supreme "Court Judge, whoso finding amounted virtually to ono of "Not proven." One of the earliest executive- acts of the. Cook Government on achieving office was the dismissal of Mr Chinn.]
