FIEST ARMED MERCHANTMAN IN LOCAL WATERS. [Special to the Star] WELLINGTON, August 21. Tcday marks a decidedly novel feature in New Zealand shipping. This is the arrival of R.M.S. Rotorua, -which came into port an armed ship—the first armed merchantman which has ever sailed in New Zealand waters. That an arrangement of this nature between certain shipping companies and the Admiralty had been entered into was announced by cable from Home some time ago, but the arrival of the Rotorua marks the first visible expression of the new policy so far as New Zealand in concerned. The ship received her guns on her last visit Home, and these comprise four 4.7 in pieces, two being mounted forward and two aft. The steamer will naturally be an object of keen public interest at Wellington wharf. ALL WELL AT THE MACQUARIES. WELLINGTON, August 21. Captain Bollons, of the Government steamer Tutanekai. has advised by wireless that the vessel arrived at the Macnuarie Islands yesterday morning, and found the shore party all well.
