OTAGO v. CANTERBURY. Bennett was an absentee from the team defending the Plunket Shield. He strained his side on Good Friday, and was replaced by Orchard. When Otago won the toss it was thought that this meant a good deal in their favor. During the forenoon the wind increased to hurricane force. The innings closed just before the luncheon adjournment for 110 runs. Downes and Ramsden opened the bowling for Otago. At 27 Lusk lifted the Grange bow-ler high over his head, and, the wind holding it, M'Farlane brought off a well-judged catch. Hayes and Hickmott piled on the runs, necessitating several changes in the bowling. At 15a Hickmott put one into M'Laughlin's hands at short-leg. Bishop did not remain long before he was run out, but he made 15 out of the 14 added to the total before the third wicket fell. Reese came next. With the total at 187 M'Farlane clean bowled Hayes, who had made 61. Patrick helped his skipper to bring up 200. At 230 Reese lifted one from Austin to mid-off, where Huntly accepted the chance. Orchard was clean bowled by M'Laughlin without any alteration in tl'ie score, and seven runs later Paterson was caught at the wickets. Owing to failing light stumps were then drawn.
