ASSASSINATION OF THE KING OF GREECE

The assassin Schiones, who was shabbily dressed, was waiting at tiic corner of a side street. He fired two bullets from an old-fashioned revolver resembling a horse pistol, which struck the King. Then he attempted to shoot Colonel Frankoudis, whose revolver missed fire. The King fell on a table outside a shop, and the shopkeeper lifted him up. Some soldiers ran up and carried the King in their arms to the hospital, which was in the vicinity The King was unconscious when Prince Nicholas arrived, and died in his son's arms.

The body was wrapped in the Gr<:ek Flag, and in the evening officers carried it on a stretcher to the- palace, Trince Nicholas and the high dignitaries. of State and clergy following uncovered. Schiones was a notorious drunkard and a half-witted degenerate. He was half Greek and half Slav, and had Teeentlv delivered a number of socialistic harangues. He lived by .begging, was half starved, and subsisted chiefly on milk. The examining 'Magistrate asked the assassin his reason for eommiting the crime. Schiones replied that the King had to die soon anyway, and he wished him' to die famous. * The murderer is a weak-minded inebriate, and a .native of Seres, of mixed parentage He was twice dismissed as a school attendant, and had petitioned the King, who referred the petition to the proper quarter, where it was rejected. SALOXICA IX FERMENT. SALONTCA. March 21. After the murder the town wa* in a ferment, the garrison believing that the murderer was a Turk. Prince Nicholas ordered strong patrols to prevent any attempts at revenge, and informed the soldiers that the assassin was a Greek, although he himself was not then aware of the fact. THE NEW KING. ATHENS. March 20. King Constantine's address to the armv stigmatises the outrage as impious, and recalls the fact that Kine George' had devoted his whole life to the army. The. King adds : " We shall never cea.se to devote our whole solicitude to our land and sea forces.'' _T.u the Greek Chamber the Premier (M. Yenezclos) paid' a warm tribute to King George's sen-ices, and King Constantino was acclaimed. The Chamber resolved to erect a national monument to King George. World-wide condolences have been received. CONDOLENCES. LONDON, March 20. The- House of Commons passed a resolution expressing sympathy with Greece and with Queen Alexandra. CONSTANTINOPLE. March 20. The newspapers express abhorrence of the assassination, and pay warm tributes to King George SYDNEY, March 21. Lord Denni.in and the. State Governors have sent messages of condolence to the Greek Royal Family <uid to Jueen Alexandra. AUCKLAND. March 21. His Majesty the King commands observance of Court mourning for 28 days for his late Majesty King George of Greece, but " it is His Majesty's wish that functions arranged in connection with the visit of H.M.S. New Zealand should proceed notwithstanding."
