TECHNICAL MANAGERS

. The monthly meeting of the managers of the Dunedin Technical School was held yesterday afternoon, Mr T. Scott presiding. Th© Secretary of the Otago Education Board wrote intimating that the manager's now numbered 21, composed as follows: City Council 4, Technical Classes 7, Maori Hill Council 1, Education Board 5, Hardware Association 1, St. Ivilda Council 1, Otago Pharmaceutical Association 1, Mornington Council 1, Taieri County Council 1, Labor Unions I.—Received. Messrs A. and T. Burl wrote asking the board to accept a series of diagrams as issued by the Plumbers’ Company for technical instruction for plumbers.—Received with thanks. —Military Training.— The Education Department, Wellington, wrote that as among the large number of bovs who obtained free places and scholarships granted from the funds of the State there were probably some to be found who declined or failed to carry out the obligations of the Defence regulations, and. in the opinion of the department, the conduct of the free pupils should not be held to be satisfactory if the requirements of the Defence regulations were not observed, and therefore requested that in the periodical reports upon the holders of free places and scholarships this matter would receive the necessary consideration among the conditions of tenure to he fulfilled. It was pointed out that no difficulty would he experienced in connection with the day boys, but there would be difficulty concerning the night boys, as the director would have no record as to whether they drilled or not. It was decided to reply that the board would agree to the suggestion of the department. —S anita ry I nst ru ct i on. Dr Champtaloup wrote suggesting that arrangements might be made for the holding of classes for examinations of inspector of nuisances under the Royal Sanitary Institute, London. It was stated that there was a prospect of securing at least eight- '■ pupils, wnith sufficiently justified the starting of the j class. | It- was resolved to give the director power | to initiate the class. ] —Director's Report.— The director (Mr A. Marshall) reported as follows for the month:—The session forth© evening classes begins oil Monday, 51st rust., and intending students will "be enrolled on and after Thursday, 27th inst. The roof of the carpentry workshop requires immediate attention. In order to provide for renewals and bring the tools, appliances, etc., rip to requirements, an expenditure of £lO to £l2 is required in connection with the wood-working classes, and about the same amount in connection with the domestic department. With reference to my suggestion at last meeting that the board grant a number of free places to pupils not entitled to theso under the Government regulations, I now recommend tha4 six free places be made available annually for holders of competency certificate*; over 14 years of age, and for holders of proficiency certificates over 15 but not over 16 years on the Ist- December preceding the date of application.—The report was adopted. —Retiring Members.— Mr Israel said that it would be noticed that there was to be a- change in membership. and he would like to express his recognition of the good service rendered by some members who had not been re-elected". The Chairman endorsed Mr Israel’s remarks. Mr H. Harris (Rugby Union) thanked the board for their remarks, and said ho hoped in the future to again be with the board.
