CITY COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last evening, and attended by the Mayor (Mr J. Wilson), Crs Myers, Scott, M’Millan, Clark, Small, Bhacklock, Marlow, Green, Todd, Duncan, Sinclair, Statham, Murray, Stewart, Carroll, Havelock. Burnett, Campbell, MTJonald, and the Roslyn representatives. —Street Lighting.— The Mayor, in moving the adoption of the Works Committee’s report., asked that danse 2, with reference to the street lighting improvements, recommending that ■ an additional 183 electric lights and 227 gas lamps be erected, be referred to the finance Committee so that they could go into matters of finance. Cr Wilkinson seconded the motion, which was carried, The report as amended was then adopted. —Water Committee.— Cr Shaddock, in moving the adoption of the Water Committee’s report, said that the Order in Council had been issued sanctioning the construction of the new reservoir in the Leith Valley, known as the Sullivan dam. It might be possible to carry on the work during the winter time. At any rate, it would be pushed on as quickly as possible. The report was adopted. —Gas Committee.— ( Cr Clark moved the adoption of the Gas Committee’s report. Cr Statham, referring to the dismantling of the gasholder, said he noticed that in the committee’s opinion there was no necessity at the present time to appoint a special supervisor for the dismantling work, as the gasworks staff were capable of doing the needful ■work. He wanted an assurance ns to that, because he did not want to see a repetition of what had occurred in the past. Cr Clark said it would be an absolute waste of money to employ anvone to supervise the work. Anyone must know that the unscrewing of holts and the cutting of rivets did not require an expert to do it. rhe contract provided that if in dismantling the holder the contractor destroyed or damaged a plate he had to' make it good at his own cost. That was quite sufficient to guarantee the council. Their -engineer was quite competent, at the present stage at any rate, to do the necessary supervision. The report was adopted. —Roslyn Streets.— Tha resolution to alter the names of streets in Roslyn, as previously published was adopted, with the exception that the proposed name of Paisley street for William street was altered to Hereford street and that Central street is to be called Wairoa street, and that the word “avenue” "is dropped from Higheate avenue. ° —Tenders.— The tender of Mr H. F. Moss for the supply ox 60 tone of chaff Avas ■accepted . for the supply and delivery of 13,000 tone of coal for the gasworks were referred to the Gae Committee. Tenders for printed forms and other printed matter, and also stationery, were referred to the Finance Committee for
