PRESBYTERIAN SYNOD

t» The Presbyterian Synod of Otago and Southland opened their sittings in the First Church last night. The Moderator (the Rev. Tames Clark) preached from Romans v., 11, and then ■ dispensed the- sacrament of tho Lord's Supper. The Synod was then constituted. The Moderator thanked the members of Synod for their kindness to him during his term of office. It had been a pleasing duty to preside over the meetings of Synod, and it was now his pleasure and happiness to propose the Rev. Robert Fairmaid, of South Dunedin, as his successor. . Mr Fairmaid was one of the most honorable of their ministers. He had done service both in the country and in the- City, and would have the sympathy and prayers of the Synod during liis term of office.* The motion was carried unanimously. The Rev. Mr Fairmaid came forward, 1 and was welcomed by the retiring Moderator, after which he took the chair. He thanked the Synod for the honorable position in which it had placed him. The Rev. Peter Milne and the Rer. Oscar Michelsen, who were present, were introduced to the Moderator. A vote of thanks was accorded to the Rev. Mr Clark for his sermon. *i Th ° u {ey - Mr rinla y s °n gave notice of the following motion : Tlie Synod, having considered the request of the General Assemblv for cooperation in the present difficulty regarding the collection for Knox College and having found that half of the congregation within the bounds failed to make the appointed collection last year direct the presbyteries to take stops to secure that all the congregations shall have the opportunity of contributing to the collection; further, the Synod cordially recommend those to whom God has given the means to aid the endowment fund of Knox College.
