UNIVERSITY COUNCIL
The following business was transacted at 'the meeting of the Council of the University of Otago, the Chancellor (Rev. A. Cameron) presiding, after 3 p.m. yesterday:— The Medical Committee recommended the Council to grant leave of absence to Dr Pickerill during the winter session of 1914, also that the salary of Mi- Swan, instructor in mechanical dentistry, be increased by £SO per annum, and that he be appointed assistant to the honorary staff. —Adopted. The Works Committee reported having instructed Park, Reynolds, and Co. to offer by auction the old buildings in George street, which it had been decided should be removed. Further, that the architect be requested to submit a sketch showing the best manner of utilising the land thus cleared by building shops and cottages. Tho question of drainage was allowed to stand over in the meantime. Au application from Messrs Wood and M'Cormack for a lease of section 19, University reserve, for use as a timber yard was declined.—Adopted. The Special Veterinary Committee reported having further considered what steps should bo taken in view of the establishment of a veterinary school, and Mr Sidey was authorised to wire* to Air Reakes asking him if, since the sito of the veterinary school in Melbourne comprises only 4 acres, an area of from 5 to 10' acres would not be sufficient here. Air Sidey was further authorised to get various sites put under offer.—Adopted. The Education Board were granted the use of the Museum in order that Training College students may be taught animal and bird drawing from nature. The Otago Law Society intimated that they were again prepared to donate £IOO for the purpose of law lectures. The following gentlemen had undertaken to act: Mr H. D. Bedford (or a substitute), on contracts; Mr A. A. Finch, property part 1; Mr C. G. White, property part'2 and procedure; Mr J. B. Callan, jun., torts; Mr C. N. ScuTr, criminal law; Mr W. Downie Stewart (or a substitute), evidence. —Offer accepted with thanks. The Hospital Board asked the Council to consider the advisability of appointing as an honorary consulting staff for the Benevolent Institution, Fever Hospital, and Pleasant Valley Sanatorium such professors and lecturers of the Medical School who in terms of the statutes hold honorary staff appointments at the Dunedin Hospital.— Accepted and thanked. The registrar of the New Zealand University forwarded this resolution: " That owing to the importance of massage in tho treatment of certain diseases, the Senate woidd approve of the Otago University granting certificates of proficiency in massage."—Referred to Medical Committee. Mr L. W. Harris wrote resigning his position on the Council. Owing to the absence of Mr Roberts and himself from New Zealand this year, the Government would be quite unrepresented ; he therefore begged to resign.—Resignation accepted with regret; the registrar to send a letter suitably acknowledging Mr Harris's services. Various repairs to the Otago Museum were authorised, also the installation of three gas stoves. Mr Piuder, lecturer on Education, was appointed a member of the Professorial Board.
