It i 6 reported in Sydney that during the coming year £I,OGO,OCO will be expended on tlw establishment of fit eel works at Port Waratah, and that a. total of upwards of £3,000,CC0 will be spent during the next five years. Tho South Canterbury Farmers' Cooperative Association have had a good year. The net, profit from the head office and branches was £29.636—a record. With £2,432 from last ' year, there is £32,168 to dispose of, and the directors will propose a dividend of 8 per cent, on ■the capital, a bonus of 6 per cent, on shareholders' purchases, one of 5 per cent. on salaries, and a rebate of 25 per cent. on stock and property commissions. The sum of £5,000 is to be added to the reserve fund. THE COAL VEND CASE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, August 26. The hearing of the appeal in the Coal Vend case has commenced in tho High ■Court. The cliief ground of appeal relates to tho admissibility of certain evidence, particularly the evidence relating to the Vend minute*; prior to the date of the alleged combination. It is contended that tho minutes of the Vend are not evidence against the duping appellants. GROUNDS OF APPEAL. SYDNEY', August 27. (Received August 27, at 9.5 a.m.) A verv strong Bar has veen engaged in tho Coal Vend" case. The appellants are the Adelaide Steamship Company, the Howard Smith Comapny, the HuddartParkcr Company, and the M'lwraithM'Eachern Comipany. The grounds of appeal include the following : That the alleged wrongful act arose from the Coal Vend agreement, wherewith the appellants, had nothing to do, and that the evidence failed to establish any intent to restrain or control the supply or price of any service, merchandise, or commodity by the appellants or any individual defendant.
