ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS.

A terrible fatality occurred at Rangataua incur Taihape) on Thursday afternoon on the Powell Process Company's bush tram line. An engine, with trucks carrying four logs to the mill was travelling down a sleep grade, and, owing to the slippery rails., it got out of hand, and rapidly increased its velocity. When rounding a cuivc the brakesman was shot off into some scrub. He was unhurt-, though he got a. great, shock. Two chains further on the engine jumped the rails, and the heavy logo crashed into the engine, the. logs smashing the driver (Percy Small) and killing him instantly. His body was frightfully mutilated.' The engine pushed ahead for half a chain, and then overturned, the logs going two chains further. The trucks were smashed to matchwood, and the rails torn up. The deceased was a single man. 26 years of age. His parents live in Nekon. At the inqucft a verdict of accidental death was returned, no blame being attachable to anyone. A serious accident occurred on H.M.IS. Pioneer at Lyttelton on Wednesday (says tho •Lyttelton Times'), S. Palmer. E.R.A., having his hand torn off from the wrist. It appears that Palmer was assisting in the lifting, of a. dynamo by tackle, when the blocks gave way, crushing hifi wrist and tearing the hand away from the forearm. He was removed to the hospital, where hi* arm was amputated at the elbow. At the inquest on the bodies of Mary Xorman and Edward Marshall, found in a house, in Walter street, Wellington, on Monday last, medical evidence was given that the blood trom each of the deceased showed poisoning bv carbon monoxide. Death was attributed to coal gas. A verdict was returned that the deceased met their death through poisoning by carbon monoxide. The coroner was of opinion that Marshall and Norman went into the house, and, finding that the gas waa not available, they put a shilling in the slot, and subsequently, by some misadventure, _ left the burner turned tm— Press Association telejrram .
