Mr P. F. Mitchell, of the Telegraph Office, who is under transfer to the Christ - church office, was last night made the recipient of a gold watch and a silver cigarette caw?, suitably inscribed, Mr B. H. Keys, officer in charge, making the presentation on behalf of his brother officers. Mr Mitchell is well known in amateur athletic circles, and was an enthusiastic volunteer, being a. -lieutenant in the Ota-go Hussars. He has made many friends in and around Dunedin. and his transfer will be heard of with regret. Ml- Mitchell left by the second express, to-day. The Timaru High School boys made a presentation to Mr G. A. Simmers, who is retiring from the rectorship of the school. The gift was accompanied by expressions of esteem and regret. Mr E. A. Hamel hais undertaken to judge at the Auckland flower show, and Mrs Hamel is to judge the decorative work. Mr .lames lies, who died here yesterday, aged 84. was a. very old resident of this province, having arrived here in the ship Chili with his wife (who predeceased him only two weeks ago) in 1861. Two years later he took up his residence, in Onma-rii. where he resided until 1880, when he returned to Dunedin. The deceased gentleman was one of the founders of the A.1.0.0.F. lodge in Oamaru. He leaves a. family of seven sons and two daughters'. The. Hon. J. A. Millar, who has greatly benefited by his stay at Rotorua, 'intends taking his seat in Parliament at the beginning of next week. An old resident of the Tuapeka- district, in the person of Mr John Wilson Christie, died at Chrisfchurch on Wednesday. For several years prior to the Consolidated Company coming on the scene the late- Mr Christie' had charge <>f the Tuapeka Company's water race, and after the former company acquired tho Blue- Spur mining riights he had the control of all the water after it reached the .Spur. About 12 months ago he loft the Consolidated- Company's employ, and three or four months ago" removed from Blue Spur to Christr'h'urch. He was a man of good parts, was pretty well read, and took a great deal of interest in matters pertaining to geology and mineralogy. It was very instructive to chat with him on these subjects, as he was clear-headed and. very observant, and always ready to t;ive a reason for the faith that was "in him. He- hailed: from Perthshire, Scotland, and was in his 75th year. He leaves a wife and grown-up family of three sons and three daughters. —owit correspondent. Connell has resigned the'position of borough, engineer a,t Dannevirke, owiivg to differences with the council over drainage matters. Mr "V. A. Thomson, of the Union Stca.ni Ship Company's Dunedin staff, has been transferred to the Strahan. branch, and leaves by the Maunganui to-morrow.
