U.S. POLITICS.

CHARGES AGAINST SENATOR PENROSE. MR ROOSEVELT ATTACKED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright WASHINGTON, August 23. The Bub-committee set up by the Senate to make an investigation in regard to campaign contributions had a bitter debate, during which Mr Roosevelt was accused of knowing that funds contributed by trusts had helped to elect him. Senator Penrose asserted that Mr G. W. Perkins, who is connected with the firm of Pierpont • Morgan, and his associates underwrote three million dollars to nominate Mr Roosevelt in 1904. The committee decided to examine Mr Arch bold, of the Standard Oil Company, and the others implicated. Senator Reed declared : "We intend to show the people that Mr Roosevelt's hands are most thoroughly tarred." COST OF PROGRESSIVE CAMPAIGN. WASHINGTON, August 23. (Received August 24, at 9.15 a.m.) Senator Dixon has published a statement setting forth that the campaign expenses of the Progressives will not exceed £30,000. The stories of excessive spending are untrue. MR ROOSEVELT'S ANSWER. A STRAIGHT-OUT DENIAL. ' NEW YORK, August 23. (Received August 24, at 11.45 a.m.) Replying to Senator Penrose's charges, Mr Roosevelt compares him to a cuttlefish squirting ink when attacked by an enemy. He flatly and categorically denies all Senator Penrose's charges, and says it is a mean and contemptible thing on Senator Penrose's part to repeat slanders on hearsay evidence. The ex-Presi-dent asserts that during the 1904 campaign he sent a letter to his Campaign Committee forbidding them to accept any campaign funds from the Standard Oil Company.
