Mr Deakin received the following message from Mr Bramwell Booth :■ — "It is with deepest sorrow that I announce that the General has laid down his sword. Pray for me." Mr Deakin replied that the sincerest sympathy was universal here. ADELAIDE, August 23.

The Assembly, on the motion of the Premier, seconded by Mr Verran, placed on record the House's high appreciation of the late General Booth's work on behalf of humanity. The .Premier described General Booth as one of the greatest moral, religious, and social forces of the present age. SYDNEY, August 23. Booth memorial services are being arranged for, Thursday next. '*' LONDON, August 22.

The Salvation Army's solicitor opened the sealed packet entrusted to him 22 years ago by General Booth by which Mr Bramwell Booth is appointed the late General's successor.

BRISBANE, August 23. The Queensland Assembly passed a re solution of sympathy.
