In reply to a question regarding a rumor that Japan was negotiating with France for the purchase of W\v C.'tWlonifj. it was officially stated in the Ft i. nil House of Representatives that nothin: was known of the authenticity of the r> port. The available information indicted that from 4,0C0 to 5,000 Japanese wo:- resident in New Caledonia, as agrtinst 1.2..V) to I.oCO five years ago. There was some foundation for the allegation that most of thj new immigrants were Japnnes? ex-soldiers.
