A FUNNY EPISODE

[From Our' Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, August 23. It is reported in the lobbies that there was considerable consternation among the Civil Service when it transpired that on a recent occasion a high functionary, who gave evidence before the Civil Service Commission, had dealt it out very unkindly as to the methods adopted in other branches of the service. The head of more than one department then submitted himself as a witness and Rave categorical denials to all that the aforesaid high functionary had stated, and naturally the latter was called on for an explanation. Whether the alleged treasonable utterances will find permanent record among the records of the Civil Service Commission is a matter that is perturbing the thoughts of those whose administration was so unceremoniously and so unexpectedly attacked in flank.
