Faulkner, in South Africa's first innings, gave a masterly exhibition of off-driving, and his cutting was especially good. ll* gave one chance, and halted 255 minutes. The innings lasted five hours. Whiily bowled superbly. Boiling Analysis.—First innings; Hazlitt, 16 overs, 4 maidens, 46 runs, 1 wicket; Whiily. 34 overs, 12 maidens, n5 runs, 5 wickets; Emery, 37 overs, 10 maidens, 94 runs, 1 wicket; Kelleway, 11 overs, 3 maidens, 27 runs ; Matthews, 12 ov,>rs, 3 maidens, 16 runs, 3 wickets; Minnett, 6 overs, 2 maidens, 16 runs. Kellewav bowled one wide, and Minnett three no-balls. The other sundries were : Byes 2, leg-byes 5. "The South "Africans followed on, being 183 behind. Faulkner and Hartigan faced Kelleway and Matthews. Faulkner's luck was out' the third ball, a break-back from Kelleway, beating him, and retired without scoring. One for 1. Nourse came next. Whitty relieved Matthews at 22. The change effected a separation quickly. Xour&e was taken by Bardfilev at third man in Whitty's first over, lie made- 18. Two for 22. Snooke filled tire vacancy, and in the next over Hartigan succumbed to a good ball from Kellewav. He had .scored only 4. Three for 22. "
Taylor, the incomer, promised to stop the rot, but anticipations in* that respect were not fulfilled. At 45 a good length ball from Whitty came in and . found Snooke's wicket. The retiring batsman had made 9. Four for 45. WT.it-" wns the incomer. Fifty were reached after 65 minutes' play. At 56 Matthews went on again in place of Whitty. Fourteen runs later White was lalren'at the wickets oil' Kellewav for 9. Five for 70.
Sehwarz came in to tee Matthews repeat his first-innings performance, accomplishing the hat trick. His first vietjm was Taylor, who had made 21. Six for 70. The next ball saw Sehwarz cleverly caught right-handed by Matthews off his own bowling. Seven for 70. Ward, next man, in attempting a stroke, fell over, and was bowled by Matthews without scoring 8-70. Matthews's fine performance was greeted by an ovation, and he was congratulated heartily by his colleagues. Beaumont filled the vacancy. The Australian bowling continued too good for the South Africans. Next over Mitchell was beaten by a good ball by Kelleway without scoring. Nine for 78; Beaumont 8.
Peglev was last man. The partnership did not last long, .as Beaumont when 17 was beaten by Kelleway. Pegler not out 8. The innings, which closed for 95, lasted 95 minutes. Bowling Analysis.—Kelleway, 14.2 overs, 4 maidens, 33 runs, 6 wickets; Matthews, 8 overs, 1 maiden, 38 runs, 3 wickets; Whitty, 6 overs, 3 maidens, 15 runs, 2 wicket's. Kelleway sent down 3 no-balls.
