MARINE OFFICERS’ DISPUTE.
[Per United Press Association.] GREYMOUTH. Octobar 4. The 24 Hours’ notice served by the owners of small steamers by the Merchant Service Guild having expired without an agreement being arrived at. the mates of the steamer Putiki came ashore at midday. There is a question as to whether it is lawful for them to do so, as Greymouth is a river port. Capiaup Wahlstrom is waiting instructions before signing their discharge. The firemen and sailors requested a rise in wages from November 1. Failing compliance, a general strike is probable.
