FIRES.

Fire destroyed a joinery factory owned by Mr Frederick Phipps .at Ponsonby (Auckland) last evening. The building was insured for £1,350 in the London and Lancashire Office, but the owner esli-matc-s his less at considerably above lup insurance. An adjoining residence, owned by Mr William Cowley, was damaged to the extent of about £IOO. The cause of tho five is unknown.

At 9.20 yesterday evening an employee of R. Brinsley and Co. (Cumberland street), working Into in the pattern shop, had occasion to go to the rear of the building, when he saw that the foundry was on fire. The brigade were already on their way when he communicated, having received notice from an employee of Hie Taicri and Peninsula Co., who eaw the flames. Tho outbreak was quickly subdued, but about £6O worth of damage was don© The building was insured for £250, and the stock for £750, tho National Company holding both lines. It is supposed that a spark from the furnace caused the trouble. A couple of hours earlier the brigade wore called to quel! a chimney fire in a private hospital in St. David street. Tire brigade were called out just before two, the May-Oatway alarm in the Phcenix Factory having been accidentally disturbed, so that it annunciated an alarm. Last night a two-etoried building, owned by Barleyman’s estate, and occu pied by Mr Richardson (dentist) and Mr O’Dca (solicitor), was found to be on fire. It was got under in 15 minutee. Mr Richardson’s workroom and fittings were destroyed, while Mr O’Dea’e Ices is slight. The building was insured for £BOO in tho National, and Richardson’s fittings for £3OO in tho Norwich Union.
