CALEDONIAN SPORTS
The Caledonian Society tried an experiment on Saturday, when they held their first autumn meeting, which took place on their own ground. The attendance numbered inside 2,000, not a large enough crowd, with the expense incurred, to make the meeting pay. Some good sport was provided, notwithstanding that Holway (the champion sprinter) failed to do hims.qU justice. He was-unable to get a place in his heats in the 130 Yards (the Sheffield Handicap) and the 220. It is only fair to him to mention that he only reached Dunedin at one o'clock that afternoon after having motored from Geraldine to Oamaru to catch the train for here. He was a few younds heavier than when he last ran in Dunedin. He was disappointed him- • self at not being able to do better. Trembath was entered for the 130 Yards, the 220, the 440, and the half-mile, but hj» only started in the last-mentioned event, which he won in hollow fashion, proving himself a real champion over this distance. Ho had his field well - beaten. The veteran M'Lac-Man started'in the 440, and ran second. His would have been a very popular victory had he fiot.home first. Duff, who captured the 220, ran with good judgment. The 130 'Yards Shepeld waa a great finish, Bemiintrhiim gaining the verdict- on the tape. No one worked harder throughout the meeting than Mr W. E. C. Reid (superintendent), while Mr W. H. M'Leod made an excellent Press steward. The Pipe Band were in. attendance. The following concludes our report of the meeting :-» AMATEUR HANDICAP, 220 yds.
