THE NEW COMMANDANT.
Major-general Alexander John Godloy, C.8., who reached Dunedin this afternoon, has had a distinguished career. Born on February 4, 1867, his first military appointment was to a lieutenancy in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers on August 25,1886. From then onwards the record of his military career is as follows: —Adjutant, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, February 6, 18S9, to November 7, 1900; captain, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, November 6,1895, and Imperial Guards, October 6, 1900; brevet-major, May 8, 1897; Imperial Guards, September 1, 1901; brevet' lieutenant-colonel, November 29, 1900; brevet-colonel, February 13, 1905, substantiated March 1, 1906; special service, South Africa, July 15, 1899, to June 3, 1900; A.A.G., South Africa, Juno 4. 1900, to August 28, 1900; commanding brigade (graded A.A.G.), South Africa, August 29, 1900, to Februar/ 4, 1901; D.A.A.G. (for mounted infantry;, Aldershot, and D.A.A.G. (for mounted infantry), Ist Army Corps, February 19, 1901, to
April 30, 1903; commandant, School of Mounted Infantry, Aldershot, May 1, 1903, to February 28, 1900; A.A.G., 2nd Division, Aldershot Army Corps, and General Staff Officer, Ist grade, 2nd Division, Aldershot command March 1, 1906. Colon d Godley saw active service in connection tvith the late Sooth African War, to which ho went out in 1896 as Staff Officer. He was mrationed in the despatches of March 9, 1897, and was made brevet-major, at the same time being awarded a medal. Later, from 1809 to 1900. ho acted as special service officer, including a period of service as adjutant in the Protectorate Regiment. Ho took part in the defence of Mafeking, commanding tlio western defence, and was afterwards on the staff, including a command of the Rhodesian Brigade. He was again mentioned ir despatches on February 8, 1901, and promoted to brevet licutenautcolouel, receiving the Queen’s medal with three clasps.
