CHASING AN ECHO

The appearance of a posse of police around a building at the corner of Elizabeth and Little Collins street, Melbourne, excited the interest of a crowd of spectators. The subdued sound of a chisel seemingly being worked in Alexandra Chambers, at the corner of Elizabeth and Little Collins streets, had caught the car of a constable on duty. Eussell street head station was immediately communicated with, and a body of policemen were quickly making their way to Elizabeth street. In a few minutes the block was surrounded by constables. Their appearance attracted public curiosity, and in very quick time a large crowd of people assembled in the vicinity. The knocking continued, and soon it was whispered that shopbreakers were in the building. Excitement grew intense as a party of constables entered the premises to creep upon the foe. Despite a diligent search, however, no one was found within. Eventually, some workmen were observed on the roof of Sargeant’s Cafe. The noise they made seemed to come from the opposite side of the street. Then the police found that ‘.hey had been chasing an echo.
