OUR NEW TOWN CLERK.
The, City Council last evening vent into com mi lee to ballot for the appointment of a town clerk from the eight names .submitted by the Finance Committee for their final selection. The result was that Six G. A. Lewin, town clerk of Lyttelton, was appointed, Mr Bellringer, of New Plymouth, who is a solicitor, being runner-up. Mr Lewin had a good majority in his favor. Jlo was runnerup live years ago, when Mr B. W r . Richards was appointed to the position. Our new town clerk was born at Lyttelton in 1867, and is a sou of the late Pilot Lowin. Ho was educated locally, and after jeaviug school he became the Lyttelton correspondent of the ‘Lyttelton Times.’ In 1396 he was elected a mem her of the Borough Council, and in 1899 he' was appointed town clerk and treasurer to the Borough Council. Ho has done excellent work in these capacities. He has taken an active interest in local affairs. He was at one time a first-class oarsman, and was secretary of the local Regatta Committee for a. number of years. He married a daughter of Mr Turpin, superintendent engineer for the Harbor Board. Mr Lewin was interested in his capacity as town cleric aml treasurer with several important negcr' bit ions On the 15tli of November, 1909, the Special Drainage Committee of the Lyttelton Borough Council unanimously decided—“ That the town clerk, Mr G. A. Jjewiii, be granted a bonus of 100 guineas in. recognition of the very valuable service rendered by him in connection with the sewage scheme.” Mr Hugo Friodlander, chairman of lie t-elton Harbor Board, wrote on D 8 of last year : “1 have no Irm staling’that Mr Lewin is fully c ,aj to undertake the work of town clerk of any city. Ho. has an intimate knowledge of all municipal matters, and possesses great business abilities indeed. He is tactful and courteous and an excellent administrator. The public body which secures his cervices will wish for no better man.” Mr Lewin. is also a, registered accountant under the Accountants'” Act of 1908.
