Tho action in which a. farthing damages was returned in Sydney last week, as cabled, was brought by Captain John Strachan, who formerly traded with the Pacific Islands, against'Dr Inner, ConsulGeneral for Germany, for tho recovery of £5,0C0 for slander. Mr Justice Pring told tho jury that as to tho counts relating to the. publication in the newspaper, they must lind for the defendant, at> he was not responsible for such publication, but if they found against him lie was responsible for the words spoken by him to th 6 reporter. Tho jury could not lake into consideration in mitigation of damages any compensation which had been recovered against tho 'Sydney Morning Her-iid' or the ' JirishanO Courier.' It must 1«> remembered, however, that the only publication of the slander was to one pei.-on, the icpoiter of the 'Herald.'
