MARINE OFFICERS’ PAT. Daring the hearing of a case in the Federal Arbitration Court at Sydney last week, in which the Merchant Service Guild made certain claims, Mr Justice Higgins made some remarks upon the question of payment for services rendered, risks run, and responsibilities which had to be taken. A man had to have four years’ training and sea experiences, had to pass examinations, and must have a knowledge of certain scientific facts and instruments. Morooevor, he had charge of property and life. Was an officer—say the second officer—on a passenger ship, carrying also mixed cargo, properly paid at £IBO a year? Mr M‘Donald (for the Shipowners’ Higgins said that it was complained that bank clerks wore not paid enough, but they were well paid compared with this. Having regard to the risks and responsibilities of a steamship officer’s position, he thought that sailors had always been, and were, the worst paid men in almost any class of employment. •SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
