F. 1 Hamel, Mr L. Kemnitz presided, and in < his opening remarks referred to the long J and honorable record of the band. They £ had attended more contests than any other band in tire Dominion, and only on one ( occasion (at Ballarat) had they failed to j socuro prize-money. During tho evening ] Mr G. B. l.aidlaw was asked to take ] charge of the shield won by the hand at ; the recent widest, and to retain it until next South Island contest. The hand < members also presented Mr l.aidiaw with a handsome case of silver-mounted pipes • a.s a token of appreciation for his untiring efforts in the interests of the bamL The ( silver .cup won for the discipline prize was , handed over to Drum-major H. SALVATION ARMY, SOUTH j DUNEDIN. j The twenty-seventh anniversary of tho Salvation Army, South Dunedin branch, was held last week. There were largo crowds at all the meetings on Snuj dav, the 20th, which _ were conducted bv a special oflicer trom Christ- | church. 'On Thursday proceedings eom--1 menced with a tea .meeting. The tables ; vvere well laden and nicely decoiated. Tho Hallelujah Lasses of the corps attended to the hungry in a way most befitting the Army. The meeting that followed was conducted by .Major Carmichael, from Christchurch, assisted by the rescue staff and the following oflieers : —Adjt. M‘Kay (North Dunedin). Capt. Prowsc (Mosgiel), and the North Dunedin Brass Band. Music, song, and .speech filled in the time, with pleasure and profit. The Army at the South end have had a good year. JUVENILE ENTERTAINMENT. A well-ehosen programme capably performed drew unstinted applause from the largo audience that patronised the juvenile entertainment by the pupils of the Convent School on Friday evening in tho Foresters’ Hall. Port Chalmers. Tho openino- chorus, ‘The Wishing Cup, 'v:is nicely sung by all the pupils. Then followed ‘ Killarnev ’ (four pianos and an organ), by Misses Varnev, Healy, Simpson. Johnson, and Maekie.; a song C Stocking-menders ’), bv the infant girls; a dialogue, by the junior hovs ; song (’ Watercresses '). by Miss Ida Johnson: instrumental duet r .Marble Halls’), bv .Misses Millies, Hay. Cabral, Birkner. Bastings. iVTMaster, O’llalloian, Woltersdorf, and Simpson : song, by the senior hoys; the cantata * \ ingt-ct-im. by Misses Simpson l2), Johnson. KnewsUibb. Woltersdorf, Bastings. Percy, and Cabral (principal characters). The second part commenced with the instrumental duet ‘ (jiu \ ive,’ the other items being two dramatic scenes; songs respectively by the junior and senior girls and the junior and senior boys : another instrumental duet, and the instrumental solo ‘Alice’; a pretty tableau an enjoyable entertainment. The accompanists were Misses O’lfalloran, Wollersdorf, Simpson (2), Birkner, Healy, A arney, and Johnston. The boys taking the principal parts were Masters J. Flynn. A. Varnev. L. Nedl, R. Albertson, A. Nenl. J. Trail, A. Albertson, L. Anderson, H. Parsons, and John Flynn. I LANCASHIRE AND YORKSHIRE i SOCIETY. ; 'J’he monthly meeting of the above was held in the Trades Hall, Mr C. Frye (president) in the chair. A good number of members and friends were present. A very enjoyable evening was spent by all, dancing being intermixed with musical and other items. The ladies provided refresh- i merits. Tho following contributed to the ! evening’s entertainment : —Piano solo. Mr I George Jackson; dialect readings, Mr c. 1 Frye; songs, Mrs Lowe, Mr Hambin, and Mr Hudson. Mr George Jackson provided the music for tho dancing, and Mr Jackson acted as M.C. PELICHET BAY BAND OF HOPE. 1 “Nothing succeeds like success” may aptly describe the first session of the above temperenvo society, which was brought to an auspicious finale on Friday by a most successful social gathering, hold in tho Albany Street School Hall. Mr Duncan Wright acted as chairman, and was just in his element among the youngsters, of whom 150 wore present, besides a number of parents and workers. The usual indoor games were freoly indulged in, and during intervals a number of musical items were ren- : dered. The essays on the work done I during tho year by the society were ; judged by Mr G. W. B. Hughes, of tho i Y.AI.C.A., who awarded first prize to j Betty Baird (Jean Baird second) in , tho senior grade, and Doris Harbolt first and Agnes Goodfellow second in the lower grade, and a special prize to Alice Wilkinson for good composition. Prizes wore also presented to all who had entered for tho recent Band of Hope competition for the diligence they had displayed, while tho Committee awarded special prizes to Nellio Fraser and Ethel Robison for being specially commended by the judges in their respective sections. Before presenting the prizes tho Chairman made fitting reference to tho splendid work done by the Management Committee, especially eulogising Mrs Ji MTherson for coaching iho_ children, and the youthful but energetic teacher (Mr Robert M'Phcrson), who, in acknowledging these votes (which werh carried by acclamation), thanked all who helped in any way to contribute to tho success of tho society during its first year of existence. During the evening a telegram was received from one of tho workers (Mr Percy _ Wilkinson), from Wellington, conveying best wishes. The All Saints’ Chapter of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew met last evening, when Dean Fitchett admitted three members into the brotherhood. A meeting was held afterwards in tho vestry, when a junior chapter was duly formed, and Mr G. R. Allen elected leader.
