CITY COUNCIL REPORTS
Summary of the reports to be presented on Wednesday:— The Works Committee recommend that authority be granted to proceed with the work of widening and forming Ca-versham Valley road along tho frontage and up to the building line of Mr C. J. Thorn’s property ; that tho forming and metalling of Duller street be completed, and the forming of White street from Duller street to Wliarf street be proceeded with, at an estimated cost of £BOO, in terms of agreement with the Harbor Board; that the city solicitors bo instructed to negotiate with Mr C. Shiel for the completion of the transfer to the Corporation of an area of land in exchange for portion of Sea View terrace encroached on by him ; and that the tender of Messrs Strang and Brcnchlev, for cartage of material from the Woodhaugh quarry to South Dunedin and returning to the quarry with tar from the City Gasworks, be accepted at tlie following rates: —Material, 2s scl per load ; tar, 6d per barrel The Water Committee recommend that tenders be invited for painting the caretaker’s dwelling at the Maori Hill reservoir.
The Reserves Committee report that the application from Messrs Mondv and Stephens, on behalf of Mr Jas. Stewart Newton, that the limits of the Cosy Dell road be defined, to enable Mr Newton to deal with his property under the Land Transfer Act, hj s been granted. The Gas Committee recommend that nine chains of 3in main be laid in Douglas street, St. Kilda, at a cost of £45, and seven chains of 3in main be laid in Coughtrcy street, St. Clair, at a cost of £35; also that the offer of the Maori Hill Borough Council to pay interest for a term of five years at the rale of 6 per cent, per annum on the cost of eight chains of service extension in Wcodnaugh, in lieu of paying the total cost of the work upon completion thereof, as previously stipulated by the Council, bo accepted. The General Committee recommend that the proposals submitted by the Drainage Board for the construction of a depot fer the reception of nighteoil into the City sewerage system, on the site of the Corporation depot in Wharf street, at the cost (estimated at £330) of the Council, be approved ; also that the draft Bill amending the Public Health Act, 1908, by giving to local authorities greater powers in dealing with ruinous buildings, be approved. The Tramways Committee report: Application from the North-east Valley Borough Council that arrangements be made, if possible, for cars leaving Nonnanby to return to Town via Casue street, or alternatively that the Castle street cars be run to connect with cars from Normanby at George street, has been declined. Tiie city solicitors have been instructed to defend the action instituted by Mr J. J. Purdie against the Council for compensation. The Electric- Committee report; Application from the Garrison Hail trustees for a reduction in the charge lor electric lighting at the Garrison Hall during certain stated mbnths in the year from 5d to 4d per unit has been declined. Ihe city electrical engineer hag been authorised to confer with the eity solicitors and report as to including in the deed of agreement with Messm C. and W. ShieL respecting tfyc maintenance of their overhead tramway in Forbury road, special clauses to adequately safeguard the interests of the Council in view of the attacument of electric wires to the said tramway. The Finance Committee recommend that the rent charged the Mornington Borough Council for concession for tramway in Higt; street be reduced from £lOl to £75 per annum ; also that Maes E. Hollo, at present employed temporarily in the town clerk’s department as typist© and stenographer, be appointed to the permanent statf, with a salary at the rate of £75 per annum.
