AN OLD MAN KILLED
AT RATTRAY STREET CROSSING. . Mr James M'Conuell, seventy-three ■ oars of ago, who carried on business as a bootmaker near the Wharf Hotel, was mocked down by a shunting engine at lattray street crossing last evening about ivo o’clock, and’ sustained fatal injuries, lying in tho hospital at 7.26 p.m. It appears that a shunting engine '.Hacked to a goods train was waiting in the yards with one waggon jlocking the footpath at the lower cressng. As tho engine came on to a signal iven deceased attempted to cross the: rack, and was cut down by the waggon, ho wheels of which jolted over his left foot. Mr M‘Connell complained to those , assisting him of interna] pains. On being ■ examined at the hospital it was found ( that a rib was broken and hie left foot i •rushed. Ho died about two hours after j idmieedon. ’ __ ' Deceased resided off Cargill road, South ■ Dunedin, where ho wae much respected, i He leaves a grown-up family. | Tho inquest was opened this afternoon before Mr Bartho omew, S.M. John M'Connell, one of the sons, testified that his father had good eyesisrht and cood hearing, and had all ills faculties about liim. In answer to Mr Irwin, who appeared for the relatives, this witness added that the deceased had been a total abstainer for thirtv-eight years. _ | Dr M'Rride, the only other witness called to-day, said that he could not state the actual cause of death. It was not shock, but probably due to some internal
injuries. Mr Bartholomew directed that a postmortem be made, and the inquest was then adjourned tili Monday, at 2.15 p.m.
