Mr Paulin telephoned at 2.30 p.m. : Thoro will be heavy snowstorms over the Fouth Island; chipping warned of heavy gales front N.W. to S.W. The Rev. D. C. Bates reports Winds westerly, moderate to strong, prevailing, and squally at times; weather probably cool and changeable; probable showers, hail; unsteady, but expect glass rise slowly after ten hours; tides good; sea moderate swell. Ashburton, which has an unenviable reputation in regard to its temperature, which reaches lOOtlcg Falir. in tho shade in summer and gels far below freezing point in winter, experienced 17-]deg of frost this morning, the thermometer falling to 14i)deg Fahr. this is a record for the past three years, though 17deg was recorded last winter.—Press Association.
