A delegate to the Tobacconists’ Conference at Wellington stated to an interviewer in Christchurch that on tho subject of the sale of tobacco, cigars, and cigarettes in hotels the Conference received an important letter from the New Zealand Licensed Victuallers’ Association, in which the tobacconists were asked to get statutory provision made to the effect that no hotelkeeper shall be allowed to stock or sell cigarettes or tobacco, but that hotelkeepers bo allowed to keep cigars for the use of guests only. The Conference were quite satisfied with this, and a copy of the letter was given to the Minister, who undertook to place it before Cabinet when the subject was under consideration.

A deputation waited on the Auckland Chamber of Commerce in regard to the gambling evil. The Chamber, after discussion, passed the following motion; “That in tho opinion of the Chamber the Government committed a grave error in legalising the position of bookmakers and compelling racing clubs to license them, thereby facilitating and accounting for a very large increase in gambling, which operates so disastrously against the extension of commercial interests throughout the Dominion, and reduces to a low shite the commercial morality of a large section of the community. In view of the above, this Chamber are totally opposed to the licensing of bookmakers by any authority whatever, and urge upon the Government the pressing necessity of the early repeal of such legislation.” The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Freo Kindergarten Association Committee was held in First Church Sctioolroom ; pro cent—Mesdaraes Gilkison (in the chair), Kwen, Waddell-Smith, Oldham, Hancock, Jackson, .Martin, Reynolds, Johnston, Kahlenberg, Cameron, and Ross, Misses Kelsey and Hutchison and secretary. A pleasant evening was spent last Saturday at “The Camp,” when a small party of musicians gave an entertainment before the patients of that institution. Mr H. 0. Stokes, the banjo expert, contributed a number of selections, and trios were given bv Messrs Stokes, Mathews, and Lewie, the latter giving several songs. Mr J. J. Harlock assisted with recitations.
