At yesterday's meeting of committee of the Otago Settlers' Association, there were present Mr Donald Reid (in the chair), Dr Fulton, Messrs W. Crawley, C. W. Duke, John Duthie, G. L. Denniston, G. C. Proudfoot (hon. treasurer), and John Wood (sec- j retary). . . Dr Gordon Macdonald wrote with regard to j renaming one of the reserves lately acquired by the Government on Signal Hill or Flagstaff Hill as Mount Burns, in memory of the late Rev, Dr Burns, seeing that Mount Cargill fitly commemorates the memory of Captain Cargill.—lt was resolved that the society write to the Minister in charge of Scenic Reserves on the matter. It was resolved that the following members of committee meet a sub-committee of the Motor Association and consider the advisability of holding a combined gynikana: —Messrs G. C. Proudfoot, John Wood, and Dr Fulton. Votes/of thanks were passed as follows: To Mrs W. J. Miller, Invercargill, for halfcrown of George ni., 1817, also "quaich" made from timber of the old Irona Church, Edinburgh, 1717; to Mr Jas. Matheson, Nevada, one pair of spectacles over 150 years old. with broad iron frame (quite a curiosity as spectacles go now); to Mr J. G. Patterson, for lithograph of Dunedin; to Mr J. Cook, Owaka, for two Maori adzes; to Mr W. O. Millar, for photo of shooting team of Dunedin Artillery Volunteers, early seventies (now B Battery), under Captain M'Farland; to Mr F. Whinam. Waikouaiti, for photo of tho late Mr Robert Oxley, with short obituary ; to " A Prieud" for enlarged photo of Dr Milieu Coughtrey, first professor of the Medical School, Otngo University, to Mr A. Willis, Wellington, for photo of Jock Graham, four photos taken during the removal of Bell Hill, 1863, terms of purchase of land in the Province of Otago, August 1, 1849, N.Z. Company Incorporated by Royal Charter, 18*1, Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, also Otago Journal No. 4, June, 1849, letter of 1864, report by Mr John Somerville on First Clmrch building, Dowling streot; to Mr Forsyth, for old map of Mew Zealand; to Mr M'Diarmid, Woodside, for the old lantern brought out in the Philip Laing, over 150 years old, before glass was used in the Highlands of Scotland; to Mr M'Nee for photo of No. 1 City Guards, taken on the retirement of Lieutenant Somerville, 1875, also photo of picnic, 1871, at Sawyers Bay (No. 1 City Guards) alongside Captain Wales's "Ferntree" house; to Mr R. M'Cann, Tapanui, for token of early sixties, ' Advance New Zealand'; to Mr James Richardson, for the following pamphlets :—' Colonisation,' circular, 1849: report of the Canterbury Association, 1851; ' Management of Shipping for Emigration,' 1851. Eight new members were proposed. The following deaths were recorded:—MiDavid Kennedy (67), Aboukir, 1864; Mr Samuel Peck Woollctt (80), Eureka, 1861; Mr W. J. Hardie (72), Matoawa. 1863; Mr John W. Davys, from Wellington, 1860; Mrs Jeanie Brownlee (68), Wave Queen, 1863; Mrs M'Lean W. Jack (70), Ben Lomond, 1863; Mrs James Cain (77), from Melbourne, 1864.
