Wednesday (Labor Day) and Thursday of this week will be the opening meeting of the season for the Dunedin Jockey Club at Wingatni, and, judging from tbe large number of visiting horses that have arrived, tho racing should be very interesting, as several Now Zealand Cup and Stewards’ Handicap horses are engaged. The Dunedin Stakes, of 250 sovs, has attracted a largo field of tWo-year-olds, and This being the first classic event in the South Island the result may throw light on future form. The alterations and improvements at the 'course are now complete, and will bo much appreciated by thet club’s patrons. Each horse will saddle up in tho stall corresponding to Iris number in tho race book, so that every horse can bo easily identified. The Taieri Incensing Committee having refused a conditional license, arrangements have been made for two temper an co booths on tie ground. Special trains leave at suitable intervals to and from the course. E. Cutts arrived_ on Saturday night with Stratagem, Full Sail, and Countenrane, and fi. LoSgley brought Montreal. H. Carr jumped Sea Dog this morning, and ho took the hurdles all right. Stratagem, (Prim, and other horses shaped well this morning. Nearly all the horses engaged at the meeting did good solid work, but it) was work that did not help one much in tho task of picking winners. LAWN TENNIS The official opening of the Roslyn Tennis Csul> took place on the courts on Saturday afternoon. The weather was perfect, and the grounds looked their best. Jftere was a good attendance of visitors, and a large number of members. Mr J. L. Salmon.! (president), in a short speech, declared the courts open for play, and congratulated the members on the sound position o! the club financially and also in respect to membership. The club flag recently presented by Mr R. S. Black, vice-president, w.ie unfurled, for the first time, and tne speaker expressed the hope that it would lead the dub on to many a victory. The thieo courts were kept fully occupied till the light failed, and it looks aa if the Committee would be Justified in making a fourth comb on the vacant ground. THE DAVIS CUP.
