BUSINESS FOR OTAGO DOCK. The prospect of the now dock being patronised, as it should bo, by oversea steamers is at present satisfactory, according to opinions expressed at a special meeting of the Dock Trust yesterday evening. In addition to the Tainui, which docks here about the middle of this month, it was stated as probable that the oversea liners Kia Ora, Rakaia, and Delphic would use the dock in the not distant future. Mr A. Cable, acting chairman of the Trust, stated that jn a few days the dockmaster would commence putting in a row of fender piles on the shore side of the approach to the dock. These piles would afterwards form part of the wharf that is proposed 'to skirt the recently reclaimed ground and run in a lino outwards from the dock head. Thk row of piles is needed as a means of steadying vessels entering or leaving the dock, and they are expected to be in position when the Tainui docks. These little improvements tend to show, incidentally, that the dock management are determined to make the dock suit the shipping, and this commonsenso conception of business should win the confidence of shipowners, whether their ships require only scrubbing and painting or the aid of the np-to-date foundries and engineering shops in the vicinity of the dock.
