ARBITRATION COURT
WATERSIDE WORKERS. [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, October 9. The award in tho waterside workers’ dispute is practically the same as the award of 1907, the only alteration made by th© Court being the exclusion of tallymen. The fact that the pillaging of cargo increased in 1907 was a strong reason for not including them. It was their duty to prevent pillage, and they ought to be quite free in the performance of this duty from any control or interference on the part of tho union. The Union Company’s claims in respect to pillage for the two years prior to July, 1907, amounted to £127. For the two years subsequent they amounted to £344, snowing an increase of £217. Hie Huddart-Parker Company’s figures for th© same periods were £63 and £173, an increase of £110; the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, £56 and £lB9, an increase of £133. These figures called for prompt and vigorous action oh the part- of th© union. If pillaging was not reduced very greatly the only conclusion to be drawn was that a large number of the members of the union were parties to or conniving at pilfering. If pillaging was not done by members of th© union they could, if they wished, afford great assistance in detecting and bringing the offenders to justice.
