LIQUOR STATISTICS

THE NO-LICENSE VIEW,

[Pee United Press Association.]

WELLINGTON, October 7. Regarding the published statement that no decrease in drinking has followed the establishment of No-licenae in specified districts, the Rev. J. Dawson has compiled for the Now Zealand. Alliance statistics showing that the increase of duty paid on liquor per head in Oamaru, Dunedin, and Invercargill, combined, which cover ’ four No-lkens© areas fautha, MataUra, Oamaru and Invercargill), was lOd per head, or a money value of £7,342. The increase in the duty in the rest of the Dominion was 7s od -per 'head; and as Mr Dawson sees no reason to credit any decrease of drinking to tho Otago licensed areas, he puts the whole difference to the four No-license areas, and contends that if Otago had increased its dirink expenditure in the same proportion as the lest of the Dominion it would have had to pay duty amounting to £65,278, instead of only £7,340.
