*. , PROSPECTIVE CANDIDATES. That the contest for the Chief Magisterial Stakes will bo restricted to last year's^candidates—Messrs M'Donald and J. H. Walker—may bo regarded as certain. So far as ihe ' —City Council—is concerned it would appear that in two of the wards there will- be no election. In Caversham Ward Crs. Cole, Rutherford, and Wilson are not threatened with opposition ; while as regards South Ward it would appear that Crs Keast, Stewart, and Sullivan, who were returned two years ago, have given such satisfaction to the electors that they are to be re-elected unopposed. The latest announcement in regard to aspirants for office for Bell Ward is that of Mr Bewley, notified in Saturday's 'Star.' Cr Scott is retiring, and in addition to Crs Burnett and Tap ley (who are seeking a renewal of confidence). Messrs A. Tapper (definite) and 11, Sinclair (probable) are mentioned. n High Ward the absence of Cr Walker fiom the list of candidates will be necessitated by his decision to stand for mayoral honors. Crs Barr and Gilkison are again seeking office, and will be opposed by Messrs Jas. Connor and Dugald M'Pharson. Leith Ward will supply quite a plethora of candidates from whom a selection has to be made at the ballot-box. The veteran Cr Small is retiring from municipal life, but Crs J. E. White and H..H. S. White will again be placed in nomination. Others offering their services are Messrs J. J. Clark and R. R. Douglas, while Mr H. B. Courtis has also been spoken of.
