The inmates had a narrow - escape. l CHRISTCHURCH, November 6. , In the Compensation Court to-day Mr ■ Justice Denniston gave judgment in the - Custom House site case. Tho Govern- ? ment offered £16,(300 for the property, and : the owners claimed £26,358. The-hearing i lasted two days. His Honor awarded 1 £20,000, with £BBO added as interest on the sum awarded at 5 per cent, from the i day of taking up. The case of the branch post office site is now being heard. | CARTERTON, November 6. At 1.30 p.m. to day a fire broke out at Mari tinborough, adjoining the scene of the re- ' cent outbreak, and three additional houses were destroyed. All belonged to Mr W. 1 Jensen. There were six houses, belonging to the Jenson estate, and five of them have been destroyed by fire. The insurance on the houses destroyed to-day were each house for £250 in tho Australian Alliance and for £SO in the Commercial Union. One was occupied by Mr E. N. King, who lost everything,' and is not covered by his insurance. - There was a heavy hailstorm at j10.30 > to-day, but the weather is now deaf, with . bright sunshine. ’ WANGANUI, November 6. The entries for this year’s show constitute a record, totalling 2,046, or 300 more than last year. ASHBURTON, November 6. A four-roomed cottage in Princes street, ■ Netherby, owned by Mr A. Santy, of ■ Rakaia, and occupied by Mr Denis Brown, was, with its contents valued at £3O, totally destroyed by fire this' morning. The building was insured for £IOO in the Royal Exchange Office.
