WAIKOUAITI NOTES.

The monthly meeting of tho Hawksbury Domain Board was held on Alonday evening, and attended by the chairman (Mr Jas. Stevens) and Alessrs Templeton, Heckler, Alalloch, and Stewart. The Caledonian Society were granted the use of the Recreation Ground for their annual sports on Boxing Day. A tenant appeared before the Board to explain why he viowould cause a forfeiture of his lease. Atfine of 10s-was imposed, and ho was informed that a repetition of the offence wouldcause a forfeiture of his lease. Attention was drawn to the fact that two or three dogs had been drowned in the main ditch opposite the racecourse, and it was decided to offer a reward of £1 for the discovery of the culprits. Tho Board intend in future to deal stringently with those who offend the law of public health by drowning cats or dogs in any of the waterways under the control of the Board. It was decided that the new pavilion adjoining the bowling green bo used only for office work, for tea rooms, and for a shelter-house.. The Ladies’ Guild of St. John’s Church held a sale of work in the Alechanics’ Hall on Wednesday afternoon and night. Tho rain which threatened fortunately held off, and the hall was an animated scene both in the afternoon and evening. The various stalls presfented a lavish display of goods, and the takings 1 were quite up to expectations. The will be devoted to the general renovation of the church. The stallholders were: Lolly stall—Misses Allcock, Hallett, J. Bray, L. Townsend, and Air J. Smith; jelly stall—Misses E. Templeton and C. Bray; Christmas tree— Misses Beal, ■C. Townsend, and Young; produce stall—Mrs Thomsbn, Aliss Heckler, and Mr Thomson; refreshment stall—. Alesdaraes Townsend and Youngman, Aliases Jones and A. Templeton; Guild stall—'Mesdames Templeton and Lawless, Aliases Henderson and Fodor; shooting gallery—Air R. Templeton. The baking competitions resulted as follows:—Scones, Airs Henry Carson; shortbread, Aliss Tot Hourston; sponge cake, Aliss Tot Hoursbon. A bed-making competition for gentlemen was responsible for a good deal of merriment, and Archie Park, our champion Cumberland-style wrestler, was adjudged the winner. An interested spectator at the sale was Bishop Julius, who, with Airs Julius, is at present spending a short holiday in Waikouaiti. Leaflets circulated throughout the township announcing a lecture on ‘No-license the Cause of Intemperance,' by the Rev. Wm. Thomson, was the means of attracting a large audience at the At hen amm Hall last night. The mayor (Air A. Heckler) presided, and Air Thomson was accorded a very patient hearing. His address was on similar lines to those given elsewhere, and he dwelt largely on the effects of No-license in Alassachusetts, New Hampshire, Concord, Alaine, Georgia, and the keg system at Invercargill Despite his eloquence, and that the address was entirely devoid of any interjections or interruptions, it was plain that the meeting was not particularly sympathetic. We have been so surfeited of late with the pros and cons of the drink question that lectures have not tho slightest influence, and beyond a cheap entertainment (!) for us the results are practically nil.—Own correspondent, November 6.
