MINING.

River height this morning, 6ft 4in; weather cold.

The master of the Waikaia dredge has very little to report for the past week's work, except that the wash has poored somewhat. A large slip on the hillside showed the side of the cut in nearly a chain. During the last day or two the wash showed signs of improving. The ground remains at the same depth. The Mystery Flat dredge had a steady run of 138 hours last week. The quality of the wash was much the same as in the previous week. The pump is now erected at the Perseverance Company's claim and in working order. It is anticipated that the accumulated tailings will have been, sufficiently cleared away to enable the dredge to come in and resume operations in about a week's time. The manager of the Mount Bex Tin Mining Company (Avoca) reports under date October 17 :—For the week have sunk the shaft 7ft on payable stone; have put a few holes in open cut, which exposed good payable stone. A start will be made next week removing overburden off south lode. The Eising Sun dredge-master reports for the week ended October 24: Dredged 128 hours and worked ahead 13ft on the usual width of cut (150 yds). The depth of ground averages from 38ft to 40ft. Prospects are unchanged, and the machinery is running well. A London cable gives the following quotations : —Waihi, buyers £8 15s, sellers £8 17s 6d; Junction, buyers £1 lis 3d, sellers £1 13s 9d. The New Zealand Industries Company, Fort street, Auckland, are in receipt of a cable from- Mr Percy Basley, of Suva, in which he states that the mining laws in Fiji are passed .on a- very satisfactory basis to New Zealand, and it is desirable that anyone contemplating mining operations there should be early in the field to exploit the metals known to exist on the islands. CROMWELL NOTES. [From Our Own Correspondent.] The excessive heat experienced in the early part of last week was followed by a cold snap. The wind veered to the south, bringing rain squalls and snow on the ranges. The river is still falling, and is nearly at the level it was during the winter. Electric No. 1 had a decent return, but as the ground is nearly worked out I hear that no more repairs are to bo effected on the dredge. : The Cromwell Syndicate's dredge has resumed work at the lower end of Cornish Point, and the ground is repdrted to be rich. Work on the addition to the Hartley's pontoons is proceeding vigorously under the supervision of Mr Sutherland. The returns of Shine No. 1, Rising Sun, and the Riley's Revival continue good, especially the latter's, which, had the ground not been partially worked before, wonld have been 80oz, for the Maori got 20oz and the Yan Yeen current-wheeler lloz from the top gravel, and now the Riley's Revival got close on 58oz off the bottom. This clearly proves the richness of the Clutha River, if a dredge with sufficient length of ladder to bottom the ground is used. The returns of Shine No. 2 and the Punt dredge continue very poor. The Clutha River dredge is again working steadily.
