Mr Solomon, who appeared in support - - the papers that an accusation had been made against the applicant (M‘CHntock) of having purchased whisky from someone who had stolen it. He wished to say that MTJlintock had for many years borne an unblemished name. He had held a license in the country and also in Dunedin. He was quite sure that the polio© would’ say that his premises had always been kept in the best possible way. He indignantly denied that ho had purchased the whisky at aIL When it came to a question between the veracity of two persons, their respective characters had to be taken into account, MfClintock had just gone into the Royal Albert Hotel under a temporary transfer, and had put all his savings into it. He (Mr Solomon) trusted that the Committee would not visit any punishment on M‘din. took on account of any report or rumor i there might be about him. Being the ho’dcr of a.temporary transfer, MTllintock virtually held a certificate of fitness to hold a license from the magistrate. Mr Widdowson: Unless come circumstances have arisen since the temporary transfer was granted. Mr Solomon submitted that that was so only if those circumstances had been proved * Mr Widdowson: Yes, we will let this stand over for the moment The Committee have received the police report for the last quarter, and it calls for no comment except in regard to throe of the hotelkeepers of this (Sty. The three referred to are Messrs R. J. M'dintock, J. Geddes, and G. Branson. A very short time ago three veung men were charged with having stolen liquor from a bond store in Dunedin, and one of the witnesses for the prosecution, who appears to have been a. kind of intermediary, gave evidence that he sold some of the whisky to Branson, some to Geddes, and some to MUlintock. In regard to Branson and Geddes, they themselves also gave evidence, and admitted having bought this whisky at apparently about half the usual cost. MTflintock, on the other hand, gave evidence and denied ‘ having bought whisky on that particular night. The Committee look upon this matter as a veif serious one indeed, and do not propose to let it pass over very lightly.’ I have caused notice to be given to these men to appear here to-day. Of course, the Committee themselves have only had this police report put before them to-day. On consideration they think it is of such a serious nature that they propose adjourning this case until Friday, and on that day they will hear these three men in regard to what they have to say. The Committee will then give their decision in the matter. Mr Widdowson, after a short consultation with the other members of the Committee, then announced that the hearing of the application would be adjourned until : noon on Friday next, when ample opportunity would also be given to all three men concerned to put then- side of the case.
