THE NORMAL SCHOOL.

A deputation from tho Otago Education Board waited on the University Council, this afternoon, to urge upon that body. not to offer any objection to the Education Deoartmeat obtaining a tenure of ground adjoining the Museum. . Mr Israel outlined the position. _ Too Board were anxious to push on with the. Training College and the alterations proposed in connection with the Union Street School, to make it the future Normal School. This necessitated tho complete reconstruction of the buildings, and the removing of the gymnasium, the school hall, and the janitor’s house. The plana as accepted, by the Education Department reqnired the janitor’s bouse to be removed. immediately near the Museum, leaving the Cumberland street site clear for the erection of tho new Training College. The bull clitics on the Museum ground would be temporary, and in case of a settlement of the dispute as to whom tho section belonged these buildings could bo removed. They now •were waiting to call for tenders. The chairman, in reply, said that there could be no dispute about the ownership and tenure of tho site so far as the University Council were concerned. The Act vested the site in them. The present Museum was by no means a complete building; in the original plans wings north and south of the present building were contemplated, additions that would practically cover tho whole ground. Application for a permit for temporary buildings might bo considered, hut it must bo clearly understood that there was no question as to title. - They had not the power to grant the Education Department any sort of lease. Mr Israel said that he did not think that the Council would have to fight „tho question of the repeal of the Act giving them ownership. Mr Allen : Then I am sure you will receive ever- consideration from the Council. •
