• UNEXPECTED DETEXXJPMENTS. , ' AUCKLAND, March 4. Charles Popper and Herb.-,*) Hewlett were charged to-day with receh«ig 600 and 180 sovereigns respectively, the proceeds of tho Navua robbery. They were again remanded for a week, pending the hearing ol tho charge® against Christie and Manning, ■ who wore rcarrestad on their arrival from. The foaturo of tho proceedings in the local court in connection with the jobbery of £I,OOO from the steamer Navua was a confession by Lawrence Christie, one of tho accused. Christie was third officer of tie Navua, and Patrick Maiming, formerly a sailor on the same steamer, and ho were charged jointly. Christie made a full confession. -He stated that of tho £I,OOO stolen from the safe £558 had been spent upon jewellery, some of which was now in the possession, of the police. Manning, it was stated, had been shown Christie’ssbaie* xnent and confirmed everything, it was decided not to try them in Sydney, and they came to Auckland nominally free, but actually under the escort of two detectives, and they intimated their intention, to. plead guilty. Mr Lundon, solicitor, asked for ai adjournment till the afternoon on behalf a Manning, who intended, for the present, to plead not guilty. This was agreed to.
