<> ' Gassell'g Magazine' for September gives its many readers nearly a dozen stories of one sort and another, in addition to further chapters of Max Pembcrton's serial, and several readable articles on matters of present interest. These last include 'The Art of Arthur C. Cooke,' 'Biography By Anecdote, 'Mademoiselle Donalda.' 'M.P.s as Motorists,' ' Women as Humorists,' and 'The Abyss of a Battleship.' Editorial notes and poems, together with an abundance of illustrations and portraits of wellknown people, make up a welcome number. The 'Review of Reviews' for October is to hand. The editor, Mr W. H. Judkins, continues his series of articles on social and political reform matters, and deals trenchantly with the question of 'Political Power Plus Property v. Private Interest,' illustrating it by a case in the "Victorian Legislature. There is an article on 'The Rise and Progress of the New South Wales Country Press,' and there are also sketches on the South Australian outlook, and two interesting maps showing the progress of the No-license vote in New Zealand. One of the most interesting of the articles is that on 'The Totalizator in New? Zealand,' written by a Wellington barrister. To these features are added tie reviews of the leading articles in the magazines of the world, and the history of the world for the month in caricature. The number is ah excellent one, and we can recommend our readers to get it. 'life' (Fitehett Bros.) for September maintains its high level of excellence, and admirably carries out its intent to suit the needs of busy folk. There is a little of everything (almost), and as the little is well done it is better to have it than a quantity of inferior quality. Mr Stanley Weyman continues his serial ' Chippinge,' and Dr Fitehett his articles on the Mutiny cities; books and bookmen are liberally dealt with; Mr T. W. Lawson (of frenzied finance fame) supplies a characteristic contribution ; there is an entertaining romance of the fifties; and the editorial notes are as bright as they are readable. A good number.
