. _ TO THE EDITOa. Sir,—Seeing that you Were unable to I answer the query put to you by "F.X." in your issue of Saturday re State Coal* I might be permitted to reply. You* correspondent is arcritmß to know 'why State coal m 5$ per ton higher in Dunedin than in Christchurch, notwithstanding the transhipment and railway tunnel charges nt Lyttelton. In the first place, the State Coal Mines Department do not pay harbor dues,, transhipment, and tunnel charges; and. secondly, Dunedin importers of State coal pay. 3s per ton harbor dues, la per ton more freight, Is per ton cartage from wharf to yard.
