ALHAMBRA THEATRE

CHURCH CONCERT,

VAL VOUSDEN. Mr Val Vousden appeared at the Princess Theatre again last night in his bright monologue entertainment. Much of his work he invests with a rare and happy spirit, and his entertainment includes mimicry, ventriloquism, and character impersonation. The gem of his creative efforts is ‘Mrs O’Rourke,’ a lady of many parts. Mr Vousden may be seen again this evening. To-morrow there will be a matinee at 2.30, at which specially reduced prices will be charged. Mr Travers is the accompanist.

The Alhambra Theatre was comfortably filled last evening, and the excellent programme was heartily enjoyed. The clever Bovis brothers made their last appearance, and in taking farewell made complimentary reference to the management. The other members of the company, including Lex M‘Lean, A. L. Cropp* Les Warton, Jack Hagan, Pearl Lovell, Phyllis Fay, the Golden Duo, and others appeared in good turns. evening there will be an amateur weight-lifting competition, for which entrance is free.

A, concert in aid of the Kensington Sunday School fund was lield in the St. Andrew s Church Hall last evening, when Mr J. A. Park occupied the chair. There was a fairly satisfactory attendance, and a varied and artistic programme was submitted and carried out to the full, enjoyment of the audience. The chairman, m the course of the evening, referred in ex- *?. the sub i Pct for the benefit of winch the entertainment was given. It was to be hoped, he said, that the day was not far distant when a new Sunday school would be erected in connection with the main church. Miss Millie Graham was the ■ first vocalist, on the programme, and rendered the bracketed songs by Claire Newton ‘I told my love to the roses’ and ‘Hush!’ She is far from the Land’ was an ably contributed item by Mr E. Y. Priest, and it secured hearty recognition at the hands of the audience. In the second part of the programme Mr Priest was equally sucm , sin S tbce songs of Araby.’ Mns Stone, the accompanist of the evening, was set down for three Chopin preludes a graceful and artistic performance. ‘A Russian love song,’ rendered by Mr C S Black and 1 When the heart is young’ a contribution by Miss Mitchell, were two thoroughly enjoyable items, which were most cordially received. Mr H. E Melitus. with his well-known ability, played S viohn selections, a Wagner and a Johannes S 6, ladies—Misses Flora White, Ethel M Gill, Evelyn Mercer, and ovau - 7 oamtily opened the second part of the programme in a series of illustrated verses entitled ‘The Seasons,’ a, pretty and tasteful piece of work. HILLSIDE WORKSHOPS LIBRARY. The second of a series of winter entertainments promoted by the Hillside Workshops Library Committee was held last evening, and timk the form of a progressive euchre tournament. A very pleasant.even-' ing was spent, the library being well filled with competitors. The first prize (an umbrella) was won by Mr J. B. Graham, the second, (a cigarette-hcMer) by Mr W. J. A. Garrick, the gentleman who won the first prize at the Caledoniari euchre tournament last Monday evening.

St. Peter’s Young Men’s Club concert was held in St. .Peter’s Schoolroom, Caversham, last evening, to provide funds for the above club. The following contributed items Misses Leyland (2), Herd, G Hawley, and Aitkcn, Messrs Moon, L. Loasbv. J.: Brady, A. Fleet, P. Smith, Masterton, Bezett. The members of the club contributed, amongst other items, a dialogue, and Miss Hawley made an efficient accompanist. Ilie monthly basket social of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Society was held in IpJ® Trades Hall htx Wednesday evening. There was a large attendance of members and friends. Mr W. Taylor was in the chair. •
