At the Marton Court yesterday Robert Ross Moore was committed for trial on charges of arson and perjury in connection with a, recent fire at Marton. Bail was allowed, self in £IOO each case, and two sureties of £SO in each case. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 25. The first actual discovery of petroleum in the Inglewood district has been made on property over which the Inglewood Prospecting Company have the rights. Genuine oil was found in swampy ground about 2ft from the surface. Previously there had been only gas indications in that district. Ihe oil belt there is apparently fully fifteen miles wide, judging from proved'indications. at -d u . NAPIER, August 23. Mr Brabant, S.M., this morning gave his reserved judgment in a case in which Francis Fitzgerald was charged with betting on a public rood. He held that there was no evidence of the defendant having a stand or place, and as ambulatory betting was not shown to be illecal ho could not convict. ti /v * AUCKLAND, August 23. Ihe Countess of Ranfurly brought from Cook Island: exhibits for New Zealand Exhibition, including a 30ft canoe, decorated with pearl shell, and also a fine assortment of model canoes, hats, and mats.
