The Auckland City Council have reached a stage of finality in conneetibn with the abattoirs question, by deciding to complete the purchase of a site at Otahuhu and to invite tenders for the erection of buildings. Sir Joseph and Lady''Ward visited the grave of the late Premier yesterday- and laid a wreath upon it. - The following tenders have been received for the Manganui-O-teao. bridges contract, on the North Island .Main Trunk lino: —J. and A. Anderson (Christehureh), £8,840 (accepted) ; G. M. Fraser (Dunedin), £8,870 (declined); Ma><-£cy Bros. (Auckland), £8,995 (declined). A novel manner of spending an evening was adopted by the Y.M.C.A. Literary and Debating Society last night, when it-held a conversation evening. Messrs Jones find Robb conversed on the advisability of openair preaching, Messrs. M'Connell and Campbell on a white Australia. Messrs MT?arlano and Quennell on Eraetrsi'e v. Protection. The Tabernacle was ««iu attended by'a large and attentive'audience last evening when the Ham'lton-Hastie-Garmong miss-'on was 'continued. Mr 0. E. Hamilton took as his subject 'Doing His Will.' The choir sang, a numter of anthems, and Mr Garmong gave the solo- 'I will eo where you want: me to go' and 'Doing His will.' Dr Kempster, a well-known American specialist on mental diseases, has (says the 'Daily Expresjr') .created."a great sensation by an admission that he. once'-killed a patient to end her suffering. He has made the confession in expressing his approval of the Bill being considered by-the Ohio Legislature to permit'-medical men to take the life. - -
