South Canterbury was played at Timaru yesterday. The weather was very fine, the ground in good order, and the attendance large. Taranaki won with great ease by 32 points to nil. The honors for back plav lay entirely with the visitors, but the forwards were pretty evenly matched. From the start to the finish, however, the game belonged to Taranaki. Play in the first spell was somewhat close, but in the second half the visitors opened out. and secured success upon success. Towards the end the South Canterbury defence practically broke down, and Taranaki did pretty well as they liked. Their passing rushes were brilliant, and their tackling very deadly. Taranaki kicked off, and the local men were forced twice in quick succession. Then Hunter got away, and pas-ed to Colman, who ran in, Hardgraves converting. From a scrum O'Leary was blocked, and Hunter, picking urj from a forward rush, passed to Cameron, who sent the leather on to Colman, who got another try and easily converted it. Open plav followed about the centre, and then the Taranaki territory was invaded, where Clark (South Canterbury) was injured, and Thomson took his place. Soino rapid exchanges followed until halftime, when the score was: Taranaki 10 points, South Canterbury nil.

_ The second spell was" simply ;; merry time for Taranaki, their backs having quit's an afternoon out. Hardly had the plav opened when Colman, Ward, Hunter, and Cameron had played .; rjuartet, and the last named gained ;ui easv trv. This was not added to. After watching a couple of fruitless free kicks Abbott got awav with a fine pass from O'Siillivan, pnd after racing from halfway wound up with a brilliant trv The kick at goal again failed. After some promising pacing rushes had been spoilt by throwing forward, Colman. from behind the scrum, whipped the leather to Ward, and it went on to Hunter, Cn mcron and finally to Abbott, who again got across the line, no goal resulting. South Canterbury then got away with a rush, but Hardgraves saved easily. Cameron skied the ball from a mark, and Crowley, following up <rot under it. and fell across the line Cameron converted very nicely. With 24 points on laranaki slowed down for a. time Then' once more opening out, Abbott, Ward and Hunter bore down, and the latter walked round the posts, O'Sullivan converting easily. Dovle headed a forlorn rush bv the bouth .Cinterburv forwards but t}w visitors quickly changed the scene and from a .penalty Taranaki added another goaK the gome ending in the visitors' favor by 32 points to nil.
